EVERYONE >> TIPS FOR AOL USERS
Getting Connected Local Access Numbers AOL and Web-Related Adding an item to your list of FAVORITES.
When viewing a web page or any AOL "area" that you may want revisit, simply "bookmark" it by clicking the heart which appears on the title bar of most windows.
Once this location is added to your Favorites, just double-click it to go back to that location quickly. Click Open my list of Favorites to open your list of Favorites.

Tip:  Create folders within your Favorites list to keep them organized!
Web-Related: Opening a Web Page Quickly!
In America Online, the fastest, most direct  way to open a web page, if it's not already in your Favorites is to START OUT on the keyboard if you're going to type on the keyboard:
    • Press Ctrl-K (= Keyword)
    • Type desired URL*
    • press Enter
*URL = Uniform Resource Locator, what many call the "web page address".
E-mail / Instant Messages (IMs) The fastest way to send an IM or E-mail message is to press Ctrl+Enter.

Place links in your E-mails and Instant Messages!
Including a hypertext link in an E-mail or IM is easy!  It can be done two ways:
  • - Drag link from your Favorites list  into the body of an IM or e-mail message.

  • or
  • - Drag the heart from the title bar of any window into an IM or e-mail message.
Stop the Garbage!
Many people forward the most ludicrous and silly e-mails around the Internet thinking they're doing good but instead clogging up others' e-mail inboxes with meaningless junk.  Some of you need to read this.  If you're NOT one of these people, read it anyway, have a laugh and direct others to this!!  Gullibility Virus

Stop SPAM while chatting
Here's how to stop those annoying e-mails while chatting. (Taken directly from AOL)

Create a screen name just for chat, then go to Mail Controls and block all e-mail for that screen name.  Boom -- that's it. If you want to e-mail with someone you meet in chat, give them your regular screen name OR go back to Mail Controls, select the "Allow e-mail only from selected AOL screen names, Internet domains, and addresses" option and add your friend's name.

Use BCC when sending any mass mail

AOL doesn't have a dedicated BCC field on their Email form. To send mail via BCC, place addresses in the CC field surrounded by parentheses. For example: (billyg@msn.com, SteveCase, lunchmeat@spam.net).

BCC is the single most overlooked yet most valuable feature one can use to protect others' Email addressess from being harvested by strangers and spammers. There are many reasons to use this feature. Click here for more information.

Other Tips Create extra lines in your profile!
When creating or editing your profile, press Ctrl+Backspace to create a new line.
(If anyone can tell me how to issue a TAB code from the keyboad, please let me know -- so far, I'm using copy/paste to put one in!) For more on this see the next link!

Connect to AOL via TCP/IP
This method* of connecting to AOL requires that you have a TCP/IP connection to the Internet through a separate ISP. If you connect this way regularly, you can change your billing method to BYOA (Bring Your Own Access) which only costs $9.95 per month! This type of connection is much faster and you never get a busy signal.

*This link leads to an example from Earthlink but the instructions apply to any TCP/IP connection. You can substitute the name of YOUR ISP for Earthlink or simply type "TCP/IP".
