Perfect day for a spot of bother
Said Mangal out aloud
Let’s step outside to let it all out
And step out from under this cloud
Oaks and teaks and
bushes and brambles
They covered him all the way
So he gathered courage and got all bold
And opened up a centerfold of Faye Dunaway
Under the canopy
he played out his fantasy
Until his head began to swim
Little did he know that all the while
The monkeys were watching him
The elder of the troupe
wondered to himself
What is this outrage, what doth this human do
And how dare he do it in front of our women
So he jumped on the poor fool
Get this monkey
off my back
Get this monkey off, ha
Get this monkey off my back
Get this monkey off, ha
Fearing the death
of their revered leader
The monkeys ran amok
One of them thought himself a hero
And bit off Mangal’s…
Under the canopy,
he played out his fantasy
Until his head began to swim
Little did he know that all the while
The monkeys were closing in
Get this monkey off
my back
Get this monkey off, ha
Get this monkey off my back
Get this monkey off, ha
Get this monkey off
my back
Get this monkey off, ha
The monkeys have done their dirty deed
Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear!
Words and Music: Sandeep Madhavan
(This song was inspired by an evening spent stranded in a jungle right in the middle of an elephant crossing zone. And a lovely, spicy, succulent lunch in a Malayalee mess.)
We’re punky without the DIY
We’re groovy without being dancy
We’re progressive without being complicated
We’re grungy without being angsty
We’re bluesy without being black
We’re preachy without a mindbender
We’re pop without the syrup
We’re hippies with an agenda
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re a laugh, definitely worth a tear
The alibi that brooks no fear
Strum that chord, kill the suspense
Choose a number or sit on the fence
If you can’t hear and you’re trying to sing
Pull out your pockets and let the telephone ring
Keep the groove and your butts in time
Pull up your socks or you’ll miss the punch line
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the anticlimax in your orgasm
The cherry on your pie
The simmering of your discontent
The catcher of your lies
We’re the blessing in your disguise
The margin of your error
We’ll wage a war on your behalf
And then connect you to the terror
Can we take a moment of your time?
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the Old Jungle Saying
We’re the Old Jungle Saying

(Inspired by ourselves and quite possibly, the state of the world
around us, post 911)
Six drunk ladies got into the water
Five came back and three was missing
One’s in the lead, she’s got no company
No one can hear her screaming
Two’s behind, and hot on her trail
No one can hear her drowning
Three’s Missing
She’s gone fishing
Three’s Missing
She’s pumpkin smashing
Three’s Missing
She’s crimson storming
Three’s Missing
Four is shark bait, and it ain’t pretty
No one can see her thrashing
Five is cramped, and out of style
She’s the only one still swimming
Six has two lovers, cigarettes and beer
No one can hear her breathing
Three’s Missing - She’s gone skiing
Three’s Missing - She’s brainstorming
Three’s Missing - She’s rug munching
Three’s Missing.

(The guitar player had just broken his fourth string, and continued
to play as we were working on the song. Ranvir Shorey was sitting around and
came up with the name of the song as he thought that the third string was missing,
and the lyrics, which unfortunately disappeared in a week. Sandeep wrote the
lyrics all over again, two lines from memory, the rest from sheer imagination.)
